29 Faces, Day 13: Jack

Doing a face each day on the ipad is proving more difficult than I thought. It's not so much the actual painting that's tripping me up, it's finding the time to sit down and actually do it. The whole aim of this series is to try and capture a likeness of the person I'm painting and develop my observation and painting skills. It's been a hugely beneficial project so far, even though I have been missing a day here and there. I've decided not to beat myself up about it and just do want I can.

STUDIO UPDATE: Painting faces on the ipad

I've spent most of this week getting familiar with using ArtRage and the Nomad Brush to paint portraits on the ipad. Here's the two I've completed so far:

I will be doing one portrait each day for the 29 Faces in February Challenge.

Below is a closer look at the Dual-ended Nomad Brush I'm using.

I'm really impressed with the way that this combination replicates real painting.

I'm still working on today's 29 Face submission, I'll be doing more this evening and posting it tomorrow.  In the meantime can you guess who today's portrait is going to be of? I'll give you a clue, it was my husbands suggestion - for those that follow my art page on facebook, this will be a easy.

I'm also taking suggestions of who I should paint for this series, so if there's someone you'd love to see me paint, please let me know in the comments.

WORKDESK WEDNESDAY: My work day went like this...

I had a lovely coffee and a slice {or two} of Apple Cake with Tracey Fletcher King this morning, it was so wonderful to catch up with her and talk about art and life. If you're not a follower of her blog, I'd suggest that you pop on over and take a look, if you are already, go on over and peak at her awesome artwork anyway.

The box is an amazing {belated birthday} gift from Tracey and her family, it's full of girly stuff {perfume, candle, soap, hand cream, tea and my favorite Lindor Lindt ball chocolates! How special. And that's one of her artworks on the card, super talented lady. 

After meeting with Tracey, I put the finishing touch on my 'Keira' ipad painting for 29 Faces. The goal is 29 Faces in 29 days, starting today.  It's going to be fun, and hopefully I'll improve my portraiture skills. Up For A Challenge or Two: Colour and Faces

You know me, I'm always up for a challenge, so when I heard about Louise's Colour Challenge 2012 and Ayala's 29 Faces Challenge, I got really excited, though I'm a bit time poor and was at first hesitate to take on more commitments. This morning, I thought what the heck, I'll give it a go. What do I have to loose? So I sat down and did this quick sketch just to test the waters, and guess what? I'm going to jump in the deep end and splash around with all the other participants. This is going to be fun!

I decided I would take the opportunity to play more with painting on the ipad for these challenges and do some quick portraits.  Painting on the ipad is a fast, non messy way to create and it's portable, so I can do it on the couch, while sitting at the table or while traveling. I can do a little bit here and there throughout the day too, it's very easy to put down.

I think it's great to to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things! As an artist I think it's fundamental to push the boundaries and experiment with different techniques, subject mater, colours, and ways of viewing things, as this results in a practice that develops. There is always room for improvement, not matter what your skill level is, and if you're not willing to learn new things or look at things from a different perspective than your work will be static and you will end up painting the same thing the same way and not get any better.

Studio Update: A New Painting.

 The Monthly Painters Challenge {MPC} reveal was yesterday, and it took me most of the day to get my painting to the stage where I was happy to call it finished and to submit it over on the Facebook Page. I know I was cutting it close submitting it in the late afternoon, but the extra hours I put in made all the difference.

I had the idea for my MPC piece very early on {the topic was 'Fabric Design'} but when I actually started painting it, I struggled all the way to the end, I honestly thought I would not make the deadline because on the morning of the reveal day I had one muddy mess to deal with and somehow I had to bring light, color, form and pattern too it.  Thankfully the composition had finally been worked out after days of indecisiveness and it was just a matter of channeling Klimt for the finally touches. Can I just say how much I admire and respect Klimt as an artist, even more so after this painting. He is a master of colour and pattern!

As I mention on Wednesday, my Nomad Brush came earlier than expected and I had a play around with it.  I used it at the end of the ipad concept sketch I did for the above painting. Below is the time lapsed video of the sketch, it's a pretty rough image, but it did help me work out a few things.

The layers of paint are really building up now! It's starting to look interesting and become an artwork in itself.  What does your palette look like? WORK-DESK WEDNESDAY: A new brush and a secret painting

It's that time again, how can that be?  The weeks just roll by so fast. I'm glad to be taking a break though to show you what's on the desk today for Work-desk Wednesday. I've been tearing my hair out with the MPC piece that's due tomorrow, I've been literally pushing around paint and getting mud, I'm going to pull it together though for the unveil tomorrow. I can't show you what I've been working on, or even hint at the topic until then, that's why the painting is covered up in the below picture, I have been painting, rest assured.

I'm very excited to tell you, yesterday I got a delivery for the states! Weeks earlier than I expected, in the parcel was the nomad brush for the iPad, that I talked about a few weeks ago.  I've had a bit of a play with it and it's great, but I can't show you what I did either until tomorrow, as I was working on a concept drawing for my MPC piece and I don't want to give anything away.

Sketching on the iPad

Over the last few weekends I have been playing with the iPad as a drawing tool, discovering all sorts of possibilities with various sketching and painting applications.  Yesterday, I had a bit of a play with Sketchclub which was recommended to me last week by Geri from My Heart Art. It was loads of fun! Here is the little sketch I did:

I finally made use of the Impressionist painting kit I scored a few weeks ago, only as inspiration for this sketching session though. See the postcard of Renoir's 'Dance at Bougival' painting on my desk {for Work-desk Wednesday} I sat down with the postcard in hand as reference and started sketching.

I even filmed it! How cool is that? With Sketchclub you can choose to video your session and upload it to You-tube, straight from your iPad, this is one feature that really appealed to me.

Painting on the iPad

Over the last few weekends I have been exploring the possibilities of painting on the iPad. If you have been following my Sunday Sketches, you will know I have been struggling with using my finger tip to get the detail I require. After a bit of research and some advice from some of my computer artist friends, I ordered a Griffin Stylus, and it came in the mail yesterday, just in time for some weekend sketching! Here is a quick sketch I did using Art Set and my new Stylus.

I'm very happy with the performance of my new stylus, it makes it easier to achieve detail, I worked up the eyes, but still have more to do on the lips and hair, so please don't judge them too harshly.

I'm now finding Art Set a little limiting. The range of colours is very small and it does not have all the pigments I use for making my skin tones. I do like the fact that you can pick the surface you use and also you can decide on different mediums and they react very simular to how they would in real life, for example the crayon looks like a crayon. That being said, the paint does not react that closely to paint, and you can not pick the size or type of the brush.  I've done a bit more research and discovered this...

... it's a brush you can use on the iPad called Nomad Brush and also a really cool program that is similar to Art Set but so much BETTER {more options}. It has all the materials plus more, you can choose your colours, the paint mixes like paint and you can pick your brush sizes, oh and you can decide the surface, it even has several canvas textures!  I've downloaded Artrage for the iPad and I'm going to have a play with it over the rest of the weekend. A Quick Sunday Sketch

Yesterday evening I did another quick sketch, using Art Set for the iPad. I have not got my stylus yet, so this was another Finger Painting for Grown Ups style work. I've done a bit of research on the different stylus available and I'm going to hopefully get one this week. As you may know, I'm deeply inspired by Ethel Carrick and E Phillips Fox, this time I used one of Fox's painting as source material.

Aged beauties from new technologies.

Over the weekend, I've taken to doing art on the iPad. It's quick, easily transportable, doesn't create a mess, and most of all it's FUN! This morning I played around with Old Photo Pro for my Inspiration Avenue piece on 'Aged Beauty'. I couldn't stop at just one!
