A Special Sunday
Why is it a special Sunday? It's a special Sunday because there's a Sunday special. My Facebook fans already get special reduced prices just for liking my art page, but every now and again I have a further reduction to show my appreciation to those who support me. Today is one of those 'now and again' times, I've decided to put this Waterhouse inspired bird on special, all you have to do to be illegible for the special price is be a fan {liker} of my page.

Art Nouveau!
I was extremely excited when I found out this weeks topic on Inspiration Avenue was Art Nouveau! What a decadent, beautifully aesthetic and romantic period. I love the pattern, design and colour of this art movement. When I think of Art Nouveau! I think of artists like Mucha, Klimt and Morris. If you have seen my 'Famous Bird' series {some pictured below} you will know I have a great admiration for Klimt.

I also deeply admire Morris, I have a beautiful collection of some of his designs on papers, which I find very inspiring. If you remember last week, my entry for I.A.'s Masquerade Ball theme featured one of Morris's designs on Valentine's dress. Well this week I actually set out to hand paint the dress in oil! I'm very happy with how it turned out, though the rest of the image needs some work, here is how it is a the moment:

MPC Reveal: DISLIKE
On Saturday the Monthly Painters Challenge (MPC) artists revealed their amazing images and the top secret topic over on their Facebook page. This month the quality of the work was very high and I was so impressed watching them all flood in! A big pat on the back to all who participated, you did wonderful work. Below is my submission, I will talk about it in depth a little later in the week.
On the 16th of each month the artists participating get told the topic {which is chosen by a member of the group, we each take turns} and they work away on their pieces without discussing how they are going to interpret the topic with the public or the other artists. So come the 15th of each month it's a big celebration as the artists uploads their artwork and everyone oohs and ahs over the talent and the creativity at which each artists portrays the topic.
This month Alice Jones from Niceties chose the topic and boy was it a challenge! As artist we usually paint positive and happy things, things we like, so faced with the topic of DISLIKE most of the MPC artists found it difficult to come up with an idea to present and really struggled with this topic. For me it wasn't until the last week that I finally figured out what to paint. I'm so glad that Alice picked such a challenging topic, after all, that is why I put together the group to challenge ones way of looking at things. Under normal circumstances I don't think I would have ever painted what I did, and I'm so glad I did, so thanks Alice! Below are all the submission for Dislike. {Studio Update} New Exhibitions and New Paintings
And I thought last week was busy! This week was even more so. I worked on mounting and framing artworks for two new exhibitions, started two new pieces for some of the challenge groups I'm in, did some more on Valentine and worked on perfecting my plaster priming technique. Now that's a mouthful.
I changed over the display at The Collective Store this week. The Collective Store is a beautiful boutique filled with all things handmade located in Wynnum. It's my go to place to buy gifts as it has all sorts of lovely things including jewellery, baby gifts, body products, chai, art and lots, lots more. Behind the hardware in Newmarket is a beautiful boutique coffee shop full of wonderful gifts and accessories and I now have two of my paintings in this beautiful shop. It's one of those places that if you didn't know it was there, you would walk/drive straight past it. GalleryB Newmarket is filled with lots of Klimt inspired items {mirrors, plates, cards, bags and now my paintings} as well as other extraordinary gifts for ladies. Over at Paint Party Friday artist are sharing the paintings they did this week. They are also talking about framing and mounting artwork, do you do it yourself or buy/get them made? I do a bit of both, it really depends on where the show is and what the piece is. The two shows I presented this week were mounted/framed myself. The Collective Store images were works on paper and were framed in ready made frames I purchased from a store, they already had a white mat board, however I did cut an overlay piece of off white archival paper to put between the mat and picture to bring out the warmth of the images. {photo here} As for the work that went to GalleryB, it was done on board that I sealed and attached Belgian linen too. The frames were in my collection, I found them at a second hand store, they were painted gold to give them new life. Once the Acrylic paint was dry I coated the painting with a two part resin. I work primarily on boards {I like the rigid surface} and I back them like this {How To} I have a brilliant framer who I can not speak more highly of, you can find out more here {Mason and Daughter mentions on this blog} Head on over to PPF and join the conversation and do some blog hopping, the artist are lovely and inspiring.

I managed to find a little time to do some more on Valentine, She's getting closer to being finished, this one has been a WIP for some time, It's been one of those transition pieces between styles. This one was started during the Carrick and Fox exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery, the show has really inspired me and altered my way of looking at painting.
Also, I have decided to have a sale on the work that come back from the collective store this week. If you head on over to Facebook and become a fan {if you are not already} you will get 25% of these pieces.

Work in Progress (WIP) 'Fear of new things'
This little image is my submission for this weeks Inspirational Avenue's topic on fear. I had high hopes of getting it finished in time, but I now realise that is not going to happen. I'm very happy at how it's coming along and like the 'unfinished quality' of it so I'm going to go ahead and post it because I've captured the essence of the what I wanted to, the rest will be painting in the table cloth, plates etc and only a little detailing on the girl {which is me as a child} Head on over to the IA blog and check out what the other artist fear:

New Work at The Collective Store, and A Facebook Sale for my fans.
Yesterday afternoon was spent framing three works on paper to put on display down at The Collective Store. Here's a photo I took during the process of cutting the insert paper to sit between the mat and the picture to give it a little added oomph and emphasis.
The five artworks that came home with me yesterday can now be purchased directly from me, and even better for you, are now on special over on Facebook for my fans/likers until the 18th October 2011.

Hoot, Hoot!
For the last few months, I have been following Tracey Fletcher King's weekly posts for Inspiration Avenue, and had it in the back of my mind to get involved myself. So when I saw her post on owls, I got really excited and thought what a great time to bite the bullet and just start. I have done several black and white ink studies of owls and also recently did an acrylic painting of an owl (below) which soon after finishing it became the Ipswich Brown Owl's profile picture on Facebook. I know having already completed the image is a bit of a cheat, but I want to ease myself into this, and what better way to do that.
I don't see owls as cute, nor do I see them as nasty creatures, I see them as wise, mostly because of the childhood nursery rhyme/poem (above) about a wise old owl that listened. I can really relate to this, I'm a very quiet soul who does not speak for the sake of hearing my own voice and would much rather listen to someone else speak and learn from what they have to say then be the center of attention in a conversation.
