STUDIO UPDATE: Finished painting and some painting notes

It's studio update time again, what a week! I started out sick as a dog, lots of sleeping and no painting for me, but thankful as the weather improved so did my health and I'm back fighting fit and sploshing around the paint! I'm calling this one done before I lose some of the spontaneity and over work it. It will be up for Auction on my Facebook Page tomorrow.  I will take a better photo of the painting in the morning before I put it up for auction, as this photo was taken in really poor conditions - wet paint + un-natural light = bad photos.  For all my blogger friends who do not use facebook and would like to make a bid, please message or comment and I'll add the bid for you.

I also wanted to share with my Paint Party Friday friends some notes from my sketch book that I made after recent research into some of my idol's painting methods.  The realist painters out there may appreciate these snippets.

  • Correct value, don't rush
  • Paint shape of colour
  • Resolved and unresolved area in the same painting (don't work up all paint to same extent
  • Imply
  • Everything is relative
  • Squint
  • Compare
  • Value is important
  • Light source- acting as a mirror for the lightest highlights, reflecting pure light colour (temp of light)
  • Local colour is important
  • Establish dark tone.
  • Work from large to medium to small shapes
  • Colour may be close in value but shift in warm and cool temps.
  • Slow, thoughtful, careful, correct
  •  Large masses matter
  • Losing edges and finding them
  • Balance- soft/bold, warm/cool, small/big brush strokes, thin/thick
  • Colour looks different against other colours
  • Observe
  • Ask yourself is it a value or a temperature shift that turns the form
