Workdesk Wednesday: The importance of study.

It's so crucial to study and learn new techniques, skills and processes in order to grow as an artist. If you don't take the time to learn more about the areas of art making that you struggle with, then you will continue to have difficulties in that area.

WOYWW  - What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday? This is what's on mine.

This week I'm looking at John Howard Sanden's 29 Steps for portrait painting. It's a great book that goes through step by step on how to creating a portrait in Oils. If you are not familiar with Sanden's work, he does 'alla prima' portraits that are very painterly and realistic, he paints like I aspire to paint like. I'm very excited to have my hands on one of his books and to be learning a little from a true master.

CALL FOR PHOTOGRAPHS

“A Chance for you or your loved ones to star in a Painting!”

I've been painting from family photos recently and I really enjoy it!

I'm looking to expand my subject matter
and am asking you to send me YOUR photographs
(old or recent) that I could possibly paint.

I'm especially looking for ones with good strong sunlight and shadows, like these:

If you have digital files or have photos uploaded to a web page,
and would like to share them with me, please email them to me at

By sending photos to me it implies that you are okay with me painting them
and selling them in a gallery or online.

Many thanks in advance for those that take the time to send
their photos to me,  it's very much appreciated.

Her Green Bunny.

This afternoon I've been busy working away on this painting, pushing around the paint, changing her facial features and working up her hand. I thought I'd be finished this artwork by now, but as I'm working from many reference photos it's always a challenge to get the form and lighting right. There is still a little tweaking to go, but I thought I'd stop and snap a photo to share with the Artist's Play Room, we are all celebrating St Patrick's Day with SOMETHING GREEN!

PALETTE & PAINT: A rhapsody of colour

What a HUGE day!  Can you believe this is my fourth blog post in one day? I think that's a record!  My Palette & Paint looks a little different than usual, as the MPC reveal was today, and the topic was 'Rhapsody of Colour' and what better way to paint that than with these bright, fun looking brushes!

I must admit I left the painting to the last minute again, it just sneaked up on me.  I thought it would be a good idea to do something that was quick and immediate this time around, so I got out the silk and the silk paints and had a bit of fun!

This was a very different way for me to work. Such a delicate and unforgiving way to create an image. No room for mistakes. It's a similar process to watercolours, where less is more and it's a gradual build up of thin colours, letting the white of the surface show through for the lights. There is a delightful spontaneity that happens with chance mixes on the silk, the paint spread uncontrollably if you don't use a antifusant. Have you ever played with Silk Painting?
