Lethbridge Finalist 2011

I'm very happy to announce that this year I'm a finalist in the Lethbridge 1000 Small Scale Art Award.

'The Lethbridge Gallery has established a strong reputation for exhibiting works demonstrating exceptional detail and creativity. With the intention of fostering the next generation of artists, Lethbridge Gallery initiated the Lethbridge 10 000. This exciting art competition is open to national and international artists for small-scale artworks. Entrants may submit paintings, drawings and 2D artworks up to 60cm in any direction. The judging criteria is based on three equally evaluated criteria of creativity, originality and skill. $10 000 will be awarded to the winner'.

My painting 'Kirra with a Green Hat' (below) was the image that was selected.

I'd like to congratulations all the other finalist on getting through the pre- selection stage, there are so many amazing artists among this years finalists.  If you have not popped over and seen their work online I recommend you do.  I would also like to give a special mention to my good friend Lisa Christensen and her partner James Steel, they are both finalists too, Congratulations guys!.

 Moving on
by Lisa Christensen

I went to art college (university) with Lisa and we have remained in contact ever since, catching up to chat about art and share our ideas and paintings for critique.  Lisa does wonderfully realistic work which depicts Australian suburbia and it's inhabitants.  Of late she is breaking away from her tight, tiny, consistent brushwork and loosening up a bit, approaching the canvas as a whole surface instead of working from one area out (which she was doing at uni).

Terra Fabula #3
by James Steele

I met James through the art store I used to manage, he came in one day looking for foam core and spray adhesive for his photographic work.  James takes beautiful close up images of the Australian Landscape which have a lovely abstract nature to them.

Below I have selected a few pieces that I'm especially looking forward to seeing in the flesh on opening night, there is way too many to include in this post, so do pop over to the full list of finalists and see the whole selection of 120 images, they are incredible.
